February 22, 2026

A recent article in the Ottawa Citizen highlights the 50-year anniversary of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and its impact on cardiovascular care in Canada. Founded in 1976 by cardiac surgeon Dr. Wilbert Keon and cardiologist Dr. Donald Beanlands, the institute has grown into one of the country’s leading cardiac centres, advancing research, innovation, and patient care over the past five decades.

The article reflects on how cardiac care has evolved since the institute opened and how new technologies, minimally invasive procedures, and research breakthroughs continue to transform cardiovascular medicine.
